Frequently Asked Questions
When Should I Visit the Orthodontist?
No "models" were used. All patients shown are our actual patients. Together we'll create a beautiful smile.
Orthodontic treatment can begin at any age. The American Association of
Orthodontists recommends that children have an orthodontic screening at age
7. Typically, Dr. Gilbert begins to to treat our younger patients around the
ages of 8 - 10 when permanent teeth begin to appear and early problems are
easily detected. Adults may decide to visit at any time as it is never too late
to have a healthy beautiful smile. Regardless of age, anyone should visit when
their family dentist recommends orthodontic care to ward off potential dental
health problems.
How Long Will I Wear Braces?
Orthodontic treatment usually runs from 20 - 31 months, depending on your
case. But treatment may be shortened if you keep appointments, use proper
hygiene and maintain proper care of your braces.
How Often Will I be Seeing Dr. Gilbert for Treatment
Visits?
Each patient's treatment is individualized. Appointments vary from 2 - 7
weeks depending on treatment needs. The usual appointment interval is 5 - 7
weeks.
How Often Do I Need to Brush My Teeth While In
Braces?
Maintaining good oral hygiene is very important for the health of the teeth
and may hasten the completion of treatment. Dr. Gilbert recommends that his
patients brush their teeth at least 3 - 4 times a day and his staff will
demonstrate the proper technique. Our staff will also show each patient how to
floss their teeth with braces as flossing will prevent cavities and gum
problems. An electric toothbrush can be very effective in cleaning orthodontic
appliances.
How Often Do I Need to Visit My Family Dentist While Wearing
Braces?
Dr. Gilbert recommends that you keep regular 3 - 6 month checkups with your
family dentist throughout treatment. Checkups should include a thorough
examination of the teeth and gums. For the health of your teeth, it is our
policy that a thorough exam and cleaning be completed by your family dentist
before braces are placed.
What Happens If I have Insurance Which Covers Orthodontic
Care?
We are happy to assist you in collecting your insurance benefits. We do
strongly suggest that you contact your insurance company to make certain that
your assumptions regarding orthodontic care are correct or provide us with the
necessary information to do so for you. While we are glad to file all claims
and address any insurance questions on your behalf, please remember that
ultimately, the insurance company is responsible to the patient. Insurance
claims are filed on your behalf once braces are placed and/or orthodontic
appliances are delivered.
What about Playing Sports While Wearing Braces?
If you play sports, Dr. Gilbert recommends that you wear a protective mouth
guard which is provided free-of-charge to our patients. Our mouth
guards are comfortable and come in a variety of colors. Kindly advise our staff
if you are participating in sports or other contact activities as the use of
a mouth guard is your best chance to avoid potential damage to your teeth and
gums.
